"Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in
purity." ~ 1 Timothy 4:7
The Youth Ministry at WHUMC provides an opportunity for our youth
to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ as they grow in
relationship with each other. They are becoming disciples when they
bring new friends into the group by showing them how to have a close
relationship with God and experience the love of Christ through
fellowship. It is important that our Youth discover their gifts and
talents and become involved in ministries with those outside of Church.
United Methodist Youth Fellowship (UMYF) includes Youth in grade
six through grade twelve. They meet on Sunday evenings during the school
year from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and have a meal, short devotional,
discussions on a variety of topics both spiritual and current as well as
areas of real teen issues they face in their daily lives. Meetings also
include games and social time.
Our group is involved in service and missions including Appalachian
Service Project, Feed America, Salvation Army, Soup Kitchen, Crop Walk
to feed the hungry, Relay for Life, visits to nursing homes, college
care kits, kits for conference, fundraising for conferences and
retreats, and other fundraising projects to donate prizes and candy for
various children’s events.
Other events during the year include Church Camp at Lake Junaluska,
Youth Conferences and Retreats, and Chrysalis, a spiritual awakening
retreat.
They also assist with our Church programs including The
Bunny Brunch, Halloween Party, Vacation Bible School, and Night in
Bethlehem. Several times a year the Youth lead our Worship Services.
Sunday School: Our Middle and Senior High School classes are also
an essential part of the faith experience. Bible study is taught in a
way that teens can apply to their everyday lives.
Confirmation: Our Youth age 12 and older who wish to be confirmed
in the United Methodist Church are offered an opportunity to participate
in a 10–12 week series of Confirmation Classes led by our Pastor along
with Lay Leaders and adult mentors. Here they learn about the meaning of
our Christian faith, the history and doctrines of the United Methodist
Church, and the understanding of a deeper relationship with God.
Confirmation is about the affirmation of their baptism and a profession
of their faith into membership in our Church.
